Spark Tally Friday!

Only 1300 words for me this week. I knew it would be that way…actually I thought it would be zero! Suffered the normal post novel finish let down and the kids are out of school. I’m hoping to get back to 10k closer to July.

I did write up a synopsis for the novel as well as a query letter so maybe it’s closer to 2000. At least this was a short synopsis. I don’t like synopsi for novels because the way they are supposed to be written comes off dry and annoying to me. Maybe part of what the agent is looking for is if a writer can make the synopsis come alive, but even the professional examples I read are boring to me.

I hope everyone else had a great writing week!

  1. I hate synopsi too for the same reasons you’ve mentioned. I’ve always been told an agent is mostly looking for completeness of the story. They’d hate to read it all the way to the end to discover there is no end. Sometimes its easier to see that you can carry plot, theme, and character change through to a climax and satisfy resolution in a synopsis than to read the entire story. But, who knows?

On another note, OMG! I got into that novel contest I entered last week. This is the third one I entered and the second one I got into, but this one is the biggest of them all. AHHHHH. Even if I don’t make it to the agent round, this is amazing!!! It’s validation that my query doesn’t suck. Been happy dancing since 7AM.

Not much of a word count for me. I’ve been participating in pre-contest stuff all week. I wrote a few hundred towards a short story. I miss writing but querying and contests seem to be where I’m at right now.

Best of luck with your novel Melinda! PS – Contests are fun.

  2. Approximately 1500 words for me this week. I’m working on a fairy tale anthology story bit by bit but also started another story which I hope I will be able to submit to spellbound for the magical cats issue. Melinda and Holly, I really, really wish you guys much success in your agenting/querying etc. May the odds be in your favor. Ugh!

  3. Impressive word count with the kids home and good luck on the novel.

I didn’t reach my goal. Too many preperations for my daughters graduation next week. But came close at just under 4,000. With said graduation I will probably not get much done next week. I’ll set a goal of 2,000 and hope I can do more.

  4. Good luck on the synopsi, everybody, and everything else too!

I managed around 2200 words. I think. There were copious amounts of deleting and re-writing. What actually counts for the word count? The words you want and are happy with? The zillion you deleted and re-worded? An average?

I don’t know that these 2200ish words were actually the words I really wanted to be writing, but often I feel like I have to get a running start, if you know what I mean. Get the words moving so the flow is there. Any words. Then the ones I really want (the ones that actually float my boat*) enter the stream.

It was more words than last week so, again, I’ll take it.

*Yeah, corny, right? Should I delete that before I hit “Post Comment?” Too late.

  5. Great Word count Deb! Keep pushing! All words written count even if they are later deleted, otherwise every word count I post would be cut in half 😀
